After buying with M-Pesa on P2P: moving the coins safely
You bought USDT through P2P with M-Pesa. Now you want to move it to another account or a wallet. How Kenyan users can avoid the network, address and memo mistakes that cause lost deposits.
Multiple exchanges | Kenya | KES | fees, access and account safety
Buying USDT through a P2P market with M-Pesa is a routine step for many Kenyan users. The coins land in the funding or P2P wallet of your exchange account. Often the next step is moving them: to a trading account on another platform, to a wallet you control, or to someone you are paying. That second move is where many costly mistakes happen, and they are almost always avoidable with a short check.
Move the coins to the right internal wallet first
Many exchanges keep P2P purchases in a funding wallet separate from the spot wallet. Before you can withdraw or trade, you may need to transfer between the two inside the app. This internal transfer is free and instant, but it is easy to miss. If the withdrawal screen shows a zero balance even though the P2P order completed, check the funding wallet and make the internal transfer first. Check which wallet the withdrawal screen draws from, because some apps let you pick it on the same screen.
Get the address and network from the receiver
Open the deposit screen of the receiving platform or wallet, choose USDT and then the network. Copy the address shown for that network, and the memo if there is one. Note the exact network name. Back on your exchange, open Withdraw, choose USDT and pick the same network. If the receiver does not show the network you were going to use, choose another network that both sides list.
Paste, compare and test
Paste the address and compare the first and last characters with the receiving screen. Read the fee and the amount that will arrive. For a new destination, send a small amount first and wait until it arrives on the other side. Some exchanges require you to whitelist an address and wait before you can use it; plan for that delay rather than trying to rush it.
If the coins do not arrive
Find the transaction ID in your withdrawal history and look it up on a block explorer for that network. If it shows as confirmed but the receiving platform has not credited it, contact that platform's support with the network, amount, time and transaction ID. Be wary of anyone who contacts you offering to recover funds for a fee; they are almost always scammers. Genuine support teams never ask for your password, your authenticator codes or your seed phrase.
