Buying USDT with M-Pesa on a P2P marketplace: paying, confirming and handling a stuck order
P2P with M-Pesa is how many Kenyans fund an exchange account. Pick an advertiser carefully, pay exactly as the order instructs, mark it paid at the right moment and know how an appeal works if the coins are not released.
Multiple exchanges | Kenya | KES | fees, access and account safety
For many people in Kenya, M-Pesa is the most natural way to pay for anything, and exchange P2P markets reflect that. You choose an advertiser selling USDT, send shillings to their M-Pesa number, and the exchange releases coins it has been holding in escrow once the seller confirms payment. It works smoothly most of the time. The trouble usually comes from one of four moments: choosing the advertiser, sending the payment, pressing the paid button, and waiting for release.
Choosing the advertiser
In the P2P section, select Buy, USDT and KES, then filter by M-Pesa as the payment method. Look past the price at each advertiser's completed orders, completion rate and average release time; these are shown on the advert or the profile. Read the advertiser's terms too, which may require that the M-Pesa name matches your exchange name or that you do not send from a third party. An unusually good price paired with a new profile and few orders is worth skipping.
Paying exactly as the order shows
Once you place the order, the screen displays the advertiser's M-Pesa details and a payment deadline. Send exactly the amount shown, from an M-Pesa line registered in your own name. Do not split the payment or round the figure. Do not use details sent to you in a chat outside the order page, even if the advertiser claims their number changed. Keep the M-Pesa confirmation SMS with its transaction code, because that code is your proof of payment.
Marking the order as paid
Only tap the button that says you have paid after the M-Pesa transaction has gone through and you have the confirmation message. Marking an order paid before sending is against the P2P rules and can lead to restrictions on your account. After you mark it, the seller checks their M-Pesa statement and releases the USDT. Use the chat inside the order to communicate; messages there are visible to the exchange if a dispute arises.
When the coins are not released
If the seller does not release within the expected time, send a polite message in the order chat with the M-Pesa transaction code. If there is still no response, open an appeal using the button on the order page and upload the confirmation. Do not cancel an order you have paid for, since cancelling returns the escrowed coins to the seller. The exchange's support team reviews evidence from both sides, and each help center describes how its appeal process works.

Scenario checkpoint
- Filter P2P by M-Pesa and check completed orders, completion rate and the advertiser's terms.
- Send the exact amount from an M-Pesa line in your own name to the details on the order page.
- Mark the order as paid only after you have the M-Pesa confirmation with its transaction code.
- Appeal with the confirmation if coins are not released and never cancel an order you have paid.
